THE PROGRAM

The program focus on the molecular basis of human diseases and therapeutics. It provides a multidisciplinary research environment integrating basic, applied, and clinical sciences, as well as a wide spectrum of experimental techniques.
The aim is to form a bridge between basic science and the clinic.

  • The thesis projects point at different aspects of genetic and metabolic diseases, inflammation, immunopathology and cancer.
  • Students learn how to carry out independent and original scientific work in a project-oriented training program.
  • They will meet regularly with a tutor for advice on the planning of their program and to discuss specific issues of their thesis project.
The final aim of the program is to train a scientist that will find a position at management levels, in academic research and clinical centres, in biotechnological industries and in other biomedical structures.

Main research topics

Genomics, Proteomics and related Technologies

Research topics include: molecular genetics, cytogenetics, cancer genetics, biochemical genetics, medical genetics, functional genomics, molecular and cell biology, genetic epidemiology, statistical genetics, and bioinformatics.

The research groups work on model organisms endowed with different complexity, from yeasts to humans, and apply a wide variety of methodologies and strategies in vitro, in silico, and in vivo. This broad range of research is a strong starting point to produce scientists trained in basic or applied translational research relevant to human health and disease.

Molecular Medicine in Immune Reaction and Inflammation

Research topics include: molecular and cellular immunology, immunopathology of autoimmune and allergic diseases, immunogenetics, molecular biology of immunodeficiencies, immunogenomics, immunobiology of cytokines and inflammation, antibacterial, antiviral and antiparasitic immune defenses

The work of the research groups covers a wide area from molecular to cellular immunology and from in vitro models to the whole organism. The response of the host are investigated at the genetic, molecular, and cellular levels. Special emphasis is on the mechanisms by which infectious agents (HIV, HHV8, HCV, malarial parasites) circumvent the normal immune response, on the response of the host to cancer and on the strategies to improve tumor surveillance. The multidisciplinary approach to immunology can lead to new understanding of disease, and to identification of novel therapeutic targets for controlling immunity and inflammation.

The program aims to prepare scientists for a career in biomedical research in academia, pharmaceutical companies, private research foundations, governmental research and regulatory agencies.

Molecular Oncology

Research topics: Gene transcription, signal transduction, growth factor biology, cancer genetics, DNA damage and repair, RNA and protein instability, genomic instabilities, cell differentiation, apoptosis, viral and cellular oncogenes, epigenetic control of tumor growth, angiogenesis.

The research groups work on in vitro and in vivo models, applying a multidisciplinary approach which encompasses techniques of molecular biology, biochemistry, genetics, genomics, proteomic, cell biology, and biostatistics. Students will interface with basic scientists and clinical oncologists/researchers to develop their research programs. Research topics covers a broad range including oncosuppressor genes and DNA repair genes, cooperation between oncogenes and neoplastic progression, transduction of the mitogenic signal, neoplastic transformation and regulation of cell differentiation, apoptosis.
The goal of this program is to train students in technologies that are relevant for advanced basic cancer research and to translate basic research into the setting of clinical oncology.

Call for application

PhD application for MMT

Doctoral programme activities fall within the framework of the "Life Sciences" and their biomedical application, providing students with an understanding of the biological and physiopathological basis for treating and preventing diseases. The main objective is to provide unifying cross-sector knowledge and technologies which, in the post-genomic era, can combine basic, formerly distinct medical disciplines (biochemistry, biology, molecular biology, physiology, pharmacology, general pathology, immunology, genetics, virology, anatomical pathology) with applied medical sciences and medical research. Long-standing collaborations with industries in the fields of diagnostics, pharmaceuticals, IT and design of scientific equipment will be strengthened. This proves the interest of biotechnological and biomedical companies, which consider the activities of this programme as a concrete opportunity to step into or strengthen their presence in a steadily developing sector. At the same time, these collaborations represent a job placement opportunity.
